Hon. Minister Kumar's Visit to China

On 14 Aug, the Fijian Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Hon. Premila Kumar led an official delegation to China at the invitation to attend the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road International Expo. With the rapid development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the business interest of Fiji as a Maritime Silk Road country has been growing in this area. As a result, the trip aimed to further strengthen the cooperation across the fields with regions and cities of Hong Kong, Macao, Shenzhen, Jiangmen and Guangzhou and was facilitated by the Consulate General of the Republic of Fiji in Shanghai.
 
The trip was facilitated by the Consulate General of the Republic of Fiji in Shanghai, aimed to further strengthen the cooperation across the fields with regions and cities of Hong Kong, Macao, Shenzhen, Jiangmen and Guangzhou.

Upon her arrival in Hong Kong as the first stop for the trip, Minister Kumar met with the Chief Executive of Hong Kong SAR, H.E Carrie Lam. During the meeting Minister Kumar stressed Fiji’s adherence to the “One China Policy” and respect for the “One Country, Two Systems” and both sides expressed strong interest to strengthen the efforts on trade, tourism and investment. Minister Kumar also met Mr. Xie Feng, the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Affairs during her stay in Hong Kong. 


The delegation visited Shenzhen on 16 Aug and met with Mr. Wang Lixin, Vice Mayor in discussions of drawing upon the developing experience of the first special economic zone in China. During the stay in the city which is also home to the world’s leading ICT companies, the delegation later visited Huawei’s Headquarter.

Rounding off the fruitful trip in the southern port city of Guangzhou, the delegation met Mr. Wen Guohui, Mayor of Guangzhou to discuss bilateral cooperation in areas of trade, investment, tourism and local government development. The delegation also visited the Guangzhou Port Authority and took a site inspection trip to the free trade zone and ecological cultural centre in Conghua.

On 23 Aug the delegation attended the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road International Expo with Minister Kumar delivering the speech in her capacity as the Chief Guest. During her speech, Minister Kumar pointed out the trend of the cooperation between Fiji and China, especially in the Guangdong Province moving towards higher level and quality, and that is underpinned by the great efforts from both sides at government and business levels.
