A welcome dinner to host Fiji's National Rugby Sevens team was successfully held in Hong Kong on 30th March. It was organised by the Hong Kong-Fiji Chamber of Commerce supported by generous sponsors among which included Tourism Fiji and Fiji Airways. Mr. Yeung, the Deputy Commissioner of the Foreign Affairs Office to Hong Kong was the Chief Guest. In attendance included: the Fijian Ambassador to Beijing, H.E. Mr. Tagicakibau; Dr. Yolinda CHAN, Consul General of Fiji in Shanghai; Dr. Desmond Lee, Fiji’s Honorary Consul in Hong Kong; and Dr. Peter Lui, Chairman of Hong Kong-Fiji Chamber of Commerce.  Over 200 guests participated in the event.

The Bula Dinner started with a traditional Fijian kava ceremony and a cultural performance by Fijian students studying in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. During dinner, a special auction was also held to raise funds to support the Rugby Academy Asia which assists young rugby players across Asia, including a few selected ones from Fiji, to develop their playing skills in Hong Kong.

The Fiji national team has always been the favourite team in the HK7S. Its popularity is rooted on the success of the Fiji team winning six of the HK7S championships over the past seven years.  Since 2015, the Fiji team has won the games four times consecutively.

Hong Kong, as the host of the HK7S, is also the place where Fiji Airways, the Fijian national Airline flies directly five times a week, taking thousands of Chinese tourists to Fiji for holidays. In Dr. Yolinda CHAN's speech, she emphasized Hong Kong's role as a "gateway and facilitator for the close friendly relation between Fiji and China".
